Bridging oceans in Chile: How TIR can expand South American trade

23 Jun 2025 · Prosperity

South America stands to gain from more secure cross-border trade through the TIR system, including stronger links to global markets via key ports in Chile and across the region.

Together with ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵmember AGETICH in Chile, ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵTIR and Transit Services Senior Manager Lucas Lagier met with national authorities to explore how cross-border trade and transport efficiency can be improved.

Authorities and ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵdiscussed global best practices for transit facilitation, with a focus on harmonised procedures and more predictable and transparent border processes to drive trade.

·¬ÇÑÊÓƵhighlighted how the TIR system eliminates the need for physical checks at borders thanks to its robust security mechanisms, such as internationally backed guarantee, and their mutual recognition by TIR countries¡¯ authorities.

TIR transports are accompanied by pre-arrival cargo information that further helps customs to optimise risk-based controls and facilitate secure transit. Business participants at the meeting expressed their readiness to comply with TIR¡¯s security requirements to benefit from resulting trade facilitation.

A productive exchange with Alejandra Arriaza, National Director of the Customs Service, focused on the digitisation of documents, border clearance challenges, and how TIR can support compliance with international standards such as the Agreement on International Land Transport (ATIT).

As South American countries work to build and strengthen trade corridors regionally and globally, such as with the Bioceanic Corridor which bridges the Chilean Pacific coast with Atlantic Ocean ports via Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. TIR stands out as a proven system to streamline transit, enhance security and connect economies across the continent.
