75 years of existence for UNECE¡¯s Inland Transport Committee

22 Feb 2022 · Prosperity

As the trusted voice of the road transport industry, ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵwas invited to speak at the 75th Inland Transport Committee (ITC) anniversary ministerial meeting, attended by high-level executives and government ministers from around the world.

At the ministerial meeting, ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵSecretary General Umberto de Pretto stressed that ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵstands together with the ITC and its Member States to ensure the mobility of people and goods by road, advancing economic growth and prosperity for all.

¡°After 75 years, the spirit of the ITC¡¯s work is still at the forefront of transport policy and transport connectivity. The ITC is more relevant than ever.¡±

The industry is also looking to the ITC to provide global coordination and guidance in addressing new challenges, including decarbonisation and digitalisation, primarily through faster introduction of eTIR. Several bilateral meetings with ministers discussed its implementation as well as IRU¡¯s Green Compact.

ITC meetings continue throughout this week. On Friday, ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵAdvocacy Director Matthias Maedge will take part in a round table on post-Covid-19 recovery. The event will focus on recommendations from the private sector to overcome international supply chain disruptions.

The long-lasting true public¨Cprivate partnership between UNECE and ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵis perhaps the oldest and most successful public¨Cprivate partnership in the UN system. UNECE acts as the guardian of key road transport conventions, such as the TIR, ADR and CMT Convention, and ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵas the implementing part of those conventions.

The Inland Transport Committee, established in 1947, is the highest policy-making body of UNECE in the field of transport. The ITC provides an intergovernmental forum where countries come together to forge tools for economic cooperation and adopt international legal instruments on inland transport.
